Kohana Wilson (they/them) is a Japanese-English animator, director and educator based in Brooklyn, NY. They are an adjunct professor in the Illustration department at the Parsons School of Design, where they teach animation and drawing classes. Their film 'edith and the tall child' won Slamdance Festival's Grand Jury Prize for Animated Shorts, and has been screened internationally. They have worked on EMMY-nominated productions and direct music videos, animated documentaries, short films and commercials. Their previous clients include Adult Swim, Netflix, Bento Box, GIPHY, Atlantic Records, Capitol Records, Blinkink, and more.
Their filmmaking practice centers around a slow and iterative frame-by-frame hand-drawn animation process using paper and pencil. They enjoy presenting worlds on a tilt - playing with asymmetrical timing, elastic characters, and nonsense gravity. Everything in the frame is motile and pulsing. Their cartoon bodies often undo themselves, atomizing and smearing around the frame before reconstituting themselves, forever changed. Land and nature are also subject to this chronic transformation, where mountains morph and flowers weep.
They are always keen to work on new projects - feel free to reach out via email :)
